Distant Love (Part 50)

Derek methodically gets dressed and transfers into his electric wheelchair.

He looks out at the barren moonscape. If this were Earth, something would have changed over the years, perhaps even from day to day. But not here. Exactly the same as the first time he looked out. At times, he would wish for a micro-meteor to add a new rock or small crater to the scene. Today, it would not bother him as there would be plenty of new things to see.

The fair was in Zone A. It was one hundred and fifty kilometres away. A serious lunar trek made easy by lunar rail. He checks his watch and smiles – plenty of time.

Moving his joystick, the wheelchair powers out of his room. He looks down at the floor beneath him. As expected, it is largely deserted at this early hour. A strong smell of detergent lingers in the recycled air from the robotic cleaners whose shift had just ended.

Driving past his workplace, he chuckles at all the work he left for the new girl, Nathalia. He knew she wouldn’t be impressed when her shift started.

Next, he went down on the lift to the main communal area. Later, the place would be bustling with traders and people coming and going. He was happy to get ahead of it all.

Distant Love (Part 35)

Timothy found himself lying on his bed, staring at the ceiling once more. He is due back at work within the hour, but is having difficulty processing what has happened.

Maeve’s family was involved in drugs. How did she not know? It was a large ship, though.

Arguments continue back and forth in his mangled mind.

He thinks back to that time, many years ago, when he considered ending it all. He had been told the week before by a serious-looking consultant decked out in white attire that nanotechnology would not be able to make him walk again. It had been a shock to find out that he’s part of a rare breed whose body turns on the nanonites. The emotional toil took time to build, but then exploded.

Maeve had been there for him, apparently sensitive to his despair even if he never told her exactly why. Hour after hour of mindless chatter helped him through those dark times.

It’s my turn to help her.

An idea springs to mind. His adoptive Mum left him a ship. He could leave the lunar system with her. Looking up the current position of La Madame, the final pieces of a possible plan fall into place.

Distant Love (Part 33)

Derek opens the door and wheels in. The walls of the small room are a blue hue, and contain little except for Maeve, a nondescript table, and two chairs.

At the sight of him, Maeve’s face lights up. Her eyes are as red as her long hair. Rising from her chair, she flings her arms around him, holding him tightly. She sobs, “Oh, Derek, I’m in big trouble.”

“What’s wrong? Why have they not released you?”

She pulls back from him. “At first, they said something about maintenance and taxes not being paid, but then they started saying that we’ve been transporting drugs from Earth to lunar orbit all this time. I can’t believe it, they said drugs were found on board.”

Derek frowns. “Drugs? That’s an automatic life sentence!”

Maeve looks back to where she was sitting. “They are saying it was K-pop ninety-nine. What am I going to do??” Her eyes focus on his.

Holding up his hands. “I am going to get you out of this?”

“How?”

“I don’t know yet, but trust me, okay?”

She nods, “I do.”

“I have to go now, but I’ll be back.”

Derek wheels out of the room. His arms suddenly felt tiring from the exertion. There was no point in going back to where he came from. So, he turned in the other direction and pressed onwards.

Distant Love (Part 29)

Maeve glances at the digital clock over the door. It’s been two hours since she met Derek.

What did he say, 40 minutes? Talk about being overly optimistic.

She is sitting in an interrogation room. The walls are a cold, blue color; there is a table and two chairs at the centre.

Talk about having a strange day.

She is walking around the room, waiting for the next person to come in and ask questions.

The door opens. A petite woman dressed in a formal black suit enters. Her straight, long black hair reaches her shoulders. “Miss Maeve Garcia, my name is Atlanta Echez from the Moon Core Security. Please take a seat.

Maeve can feel her muscles tense. “I have already spent over two hours answering questions. Can you not talk to your colleagues?”

Atlanta sat down and put her hands on the table, “I don’t think you understand the gravity of the situation you are in.

“You have been involved in an emergency crash landing that endangered not only the lives of the people on your vessel but also thousands of lives on the lunar surface.” She leans forward with her eyes wide open. “This is a very serious matter. And not only that, the ship had not been receiving the required maintenance, and there is the small issue of tax owed to the Earth authorities.”

Maeve sits down opposite her, her hand shaking. “Mom looks after that stuff.”

Distant Love (Part 26)

Derek goes down the lift to the ground level and makes his way to the entry area. He looks out to see them getting closer with every rotation. Their entry is now imminent. He is waiting for the hatch to turn.

He goes over to the left, not wanting his chair to be the first thing she sees.

His heart is pumping now, and he reminisces about their first virtual meeting. It was in the game Swords of War about three years ago. Her army had seemed to come from nowhere and had cut a swathe through his. Then, the taunting had begun. Not what he had expected from a young woman on so many levels. Of course, a rematch was inevitable, and they grew close. Well, close for people thousands of kilometres apart. Meeting virtually was perfect. He could put his best foot forward. Not show his frailties. This was something else entirely.

Six foot, broad-shouldered, with strong athletic legs. That is what his avatars looked like. Five feet seven, with a thin frame, is the reality. And the chair, of course.

The hatch turns, and a crowd spills out into the atrium. He spots her long, red hair, which she had told him about, draped down the back of a uniform.

Distant Love (Part 25)

Maeve looks at the giant dome that is the moon station Sector C. It is a large, translucent dome with multiple levels inside, under a star-laden sky. She sees dots moving. Looking down at the grey regolith, she hopes to join them.

Thank God for Derek; everybody made it back safely. She shudders at the thought of what would have happened without him.

Feeling sweaty in the spacesuit, she wonders if he will find her attractive.

I hope so.

One of the rescuers had made a strange comment, though. When she had relayed the story of what had happened, she stated that Derek probably would have been there himself if not for the rocky surface.

What was that supposed to mean?

Her Mom talks over the communications. “Don’t forget to thank that, Derek. And thank you, Maeve. The two of you saved the ship and everybody on board.”

“I will, Mom.” Even after a near-death experience, Mom just keeps being Mom.

Another crater to traverse.

Just as well, I can hop over all these obstacles in the low gravity.

They are getting closer now, and she can see that the station is internally spinning to create artificial gravity close to that of Earth.

Distant Love (Part 22)

Maeve hears Derek take a large breath. He speaks in a serious tone. “Your ship has no landing gear. To have a soft landing, you will need to initiate the thrusters at certain points as it descends. Even then, it would ordinarily be considered a crash landing.

“I’m going to change the holographic display. You will now see a much smaller ship in front of you and the moon in the distance. Your landing area is marked out, along with the different points on the trajectory you need to take action at.”

The new holographic display appears.

Maeve stares in awe. “I don’t know about. Can you not do it remotely, or maybe get an AI to do it?”

“I’m afraid not. Unfortunately, I will be unable to communicate with you as you near the surface. No AI has been trained on what you are about to do.

It’s up to you, and you alone.”

There is silence. Maeve says, “I understand.”

For the next ten minutes, she watches the ship approach the moon. She launches the thrusters at the first marked point. Then releases.

Derek speaks. She can hear the fear in his voice. “I’m about to lose communications. Best of luck, and I’ll see you soon.”

Distant Love (Part 21)

Maeve feels her heart beating, “I’m not sure I can do this, Derek.”

“Yes, you can. Remember when you thought you were a goner in Terminutus V? I messaged you that you could do it, and you did. And I’m telling you now, you have this.”

She grinned. “You always were my biggest supporter. If I do make it through this, we must meet up. You can show me the best places in Moon Sector C. What do you say?”

There is a pause for a few seconds.

“Yes, we’ll do that. I promise.”

The holographic display begins to flicker, and a red dot appears. Maeve purses her lips. “There’s something wrong.”

Back on the moon, Derek is trying to understand what has gone wrong and what can be done to rectify the situation. He bites his bottom lip as he looks at the timer at the bottom right of his screen. It shows fifteen minutes counting down. It denotes the time left before Maeve either lands safely or dies in a massive fireball.

You can do this, Derek.

“Okay, Maeve, we need to cut off the fuel to a thruster. Press the red dot three times.”

She did so, and the display stopped flickering.

Derek tapped his desk. “Okay, Maeve. Here comes the hard part.”

Distant Love (Part 15)

Derek’s eyes flash from one screen to the next. It’s almost time for him to chat with Maeve again. There is sweat on his brow.

He presses the button to reopen communications with C4365. “This is Moon Sector C. Come in C4365.”

A high-pitched voice replies. “This is C4365, over. Am I happy to hear from you.”

Derek smiles. “What is your status C4365?”

“All non-essential people on board have been evacuated. My mum, eh The Captain wants to know, can we commence the procedure to land in Moon, Sector C.”

“Maeve, and I hope you don’t mind me using your first name. But, we’re going to have to talk to each other an awful lot if we’re going to get through this. I’m going to be frank, is that okay? You won’t panic on me.”

For a couple of seconds, there is silence. Then a response. “I won’t.”

“Your ship was never designed to land, not on the moon and definitely not on Earth. Still, that doesn’t make it impossible. It should be very possible if you listen to and follow my instructions closely. And the ship cannot be abandoned as it’s already on a collision course that could potentially hit a moon station. Now, my first question: have you ever taken control of the ship before?

Distant Love (Part 11)

Derek stares at the screen and smiles. Most of the ships are moving in the expected trajectory. “How are things on your side, Natasha?”

“Good, everything appears fine, but that was close. The first one we’ve seen in months. You”

Derek grimaces. “I thought I was in the clear, but there’s definitely something up with C4365. Bolux. It must be in trouble.”

Natasha stands up and looks over at him, her brow furrowed. “How do you know?”

“Well, let me put it like this. It’s zigzagging all over the place. And that cannot be good.”

She walks over and stares at his screen for a moment. “No, definitely not. You know what to do. Follow procedure. You can do this.”

“So much for an easy day at work.”

He opens communications with C4365. “Please advise your status. You have deviated from your flight path.” The message is put on continuous repeat.

Tapping the table, he wonders how badly the ship has been damaged and hopes he won’t have to stay on late. There was a good documentary about the planned colonization of Sedna that he wanted to watch. To him, it seemed so much more exotic than his own existence.

A cackling noise came over the communications device. Then a voice started speaking into his headset.
